Description

Having tried lots of other ways to help my severely dyslexic but very intelligent oldest son, aged 8, I had almost given up. Having four young children my time is limited and so many other systems seemed to ask the impossible - and to blame you as a parent if you were simply unable to provide the sort of help that really only parents of only children can! This system is different. Yes, you do need a few minutes of peace a day, but even I can do that. There is no huge barrier to overcome - it starts with the letters of the alphabet and moves on not step by step but as it says toe by toe. After three weeks on the system my son gained nearly six months in reading age and better still he looked forward to doing his exercises each day. I showed him the end of the book and explained that reading that was where we were going to get to - together, toe-by-toe. He wantes to make it and he can see that he can do it - little by little. Now we are two months in - we haven''t reassessed his reading age but he read a whole page of Harry Potter to himself recently, just like his friends do. Nine weeks ago he couldn''t read the word ''dam'' or ''set''. He seems six inches taller almost! This has a lot to do with the fact that the book also implicitly boosts self confidence - there are no huge gaps to fill, and the exercises are each only minutely more advanced than the previous one so there is a good deal of familiar territory mixed in with the new things. I simply have no criticisms for this book. As far as I am concerned this book is IT for dyslexia. Buy it and use it!Ha

My daughter is dyslexic and was not diagnosed until the 5th grade, at which time she tested at 3rd grade, one month reading level. Someone recommended an online program that was $300 which she did independently. She resisted it so much that it began to be a problem, but she did get to 4th grade reading before it fell apart and I stopped fighting her about continuing - we moved to a new state and middle school became a nightmare so there was no time or energy to work on a program that she detested. This summer I stumbled upon Toe by Toe (after making the decision to invest in an extremely expensive special school this year), and made the investment of the equivalent of one restaurant meal for two. We started working 10 - 15 min a night and the results were amazing. She started out over 2 years behind and jumped 10 months in less than 20 sessions. She has been reading 4th grade level books since the 4th grade and now she is reading adult level books. Her fluency is exponentially better, she attacks words without fear now, and she remembers rules that the other program taught her that she never really learned, like the silent e that I honestly never thought she would get. I haven''t tested her again - we are working very slowly due to school and after school activities, but she has still been progressing along. The biggest difference between TBT and the other is that I can gauge exactly where the problem is because I can SEE what the struggles are because I am doing the guiding, and that makes all the difference. If you follow the procedures, it sticks. We got sidelined for a month because of sickness, etc, and I backed up many pages to review, and quickly stopped that because even though it had been a month before she breezed through everything that I was reviewing. If I had known about Toe by Toe in kindergarten (and more importantly, known what the problem was that early), I would not be spending $15K on private school - she would never have gotten so far behind and developed such anxiety. If you have a child, no matter the age, that does not read fluently and struggles with phonics and sounding out unknown words, buy this book and then do it. Then join the Facebook group for the support. You will not regret it. Your child really can learn how to read at grade level with this program. And you don''t need an expensive OG tutor to make it happen (because you know your school can not do it either). This book should really cost substantially more than they are charging - there really is no amount of money that most wouldn''t spend to get their kid up to their peer''s level!

I waited for several years before jumping in and assisting my daughter with reading at home in addition to the support she receives at school. In the meantime, I researched several different options and everything seemed too cumbersome and difficult to employ on a daily basis with our busy, inconsistent after school schedules. British friends of ours recommended Toe By Toe while we were living overseas and it sounded just awful; the exercises and "ticking" system sounded almost offensive and certainly something my daughter would never buy into. I finally decided to go ahead with Toe by Toe this past February (2018) after my daughter was receiving inadequate support in her fifth grade classroom. We are now four months into the program and I am so very grateful for the structure and consistency it provides. Not only am I seeing dramatic improvement in my daughter''s decoding/word attack skills, I''m able to recognize patterns and isolate specific skills that need improvement. I''m so impressed with this program that so adeptly weeds out the gimmicks and games inherent in most of the other reading support programs and utilizes our students'' time so efficiently. My daughter cried and threw fits for the first month, which were often driven by feeling "stupid" when she would miss the more elementary skills. I recommend standing firm and sticking to 10-20 minutes per day. Your student will come around when they understand that Toe by Toe is not negotiable and realize that the time spent each day is short and worthwhile. I''ve even used the Toe by Toe method to create a multiplication facts exercise that has helped my daughter fill in her math facts gaps within a month. Toe by Toe is a game changer.

I am homeschooling mom of four kids ranging in age from 6-12 years old. If there is one thing that I have learned, it is that every kid really is different and what may work for one child in learning to read may not work for another.

I used The Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading with my oldest child and it worked beautifully. My second child has hyperlexia and he taught himself to read (albeit with very little comprehension). Then along came my third child.

My third child learned his alphabet well enough and so I tried, when the time was right, to teach him to read using The Ordinary Parents Guide. That didn''t work hardly at all so I switched to All About Reading. That seemed to work until we got to consonant blends. Not only was he not able to read blends, he didn''t seem to be able to even hear them. I tried to supplement with Explode the Code, both workbook and online. It has worked a little but not much past book three. I should add that he is a third grader with the reading level of a first grader based on standardized tests.

I forget how I found out about Toe by Toe, but I am so thankful that I did. (I was probably looking up resources for dyslexia. It is not an official diagnosis but he has a lot of the markers). My son is actually able to sound out blends now. He is truly making progress. I have hope. I am stunned when I sit down with him and he is able to read through column after column of words. It is amazing to me that once he has read a word correct three times in a row (at least 24 hours between each try) it is in his long term memory.

If you have a child with dyslexia or one that has trouble with blends, or just a struggling reader in general, I encourage you to try Toe by Toe. It has worked for my son when many other great reading curriculums didn''t.

I have seen my 11 year old dyslexic make some great progress through Toe-by-Toe. This is something easy for us to do every day, and we can choose how long we want to work on it. I have tried many different curriculums with him, and this was one of the most inexpensive and yet most effective thus far. I recommend if you use Toe by Toe you get on the corresponding Facebook page. They are super helpful with any questions or issues that come up.

This is the only program we''ve tried that actually has improved her reading. We''ve been doing it for 6 weeks. She reads for fun now. She brings this to me every day and is excited to do her lessons because she can see her progress. We only do about 10-15 minutes a day. It''s an easy program to stick to. If you''re child guesses words, I highly recommend this book.

I started Toe by Toe with my profoundly dyslexic son on the recommendation of a friend when he was 6. We have been working on this over the last 19 months and are now 3/4 of the way through. We spend 20 minutes 4-5 times a week. The book is very structured with straight forward instructions. This means that I can coach him having no personal teaching experience . There are no distractions which works well for a child with significant literacy and attention issues. The mix of real and made up words using syllable division and over-learning really works. There is no doubt that it requires motivation to stick at this but the improvement is real and has been sustained. His reading age has increased from 5 years 5 months at the start to 8 years 1 month in 17 months. This has been truly amazing and the progress has far outstripped that expected by his teachers. He is now keen to read and this improvement has been significant for his learning in all subjects. His twin without literacy issues has benefited from the syllable division technique and his reading has also improved dramatically. We have also used Stareway to spelling with great success for my dyslexic son and Stride Ahead with my 9 year old in order to improve fluency and hence comprehension. Keda Cowling has produced a truly fantastic resource that I would really recommend. It has been a bit of a labour of love but worth every minute to now see the results which are truly amazing! This is a work book so buy new Edit It has taken 2 years and we have now finished! Reading age has increased from 5 years 5 months at the start, to 10 years 7 months at the end, with an actual age of 8 years 0 months. The single intervention of using Toe by Toe has without a doubt changed his life. Thank you Keda Cowling.

I needed to withdraw my son from primary school aged 8 as he was struggling and hated every day of it. I purchased this book as part of my resources for a homeschool curriculum. Over the course of the next two years, using this book as the main daily task for learning to read, my son went from being 18 months behind his peers to being 6 month ahead. We finished the whole book and at the end he was a fluent reader. He returned to school before we finished the book but the school continued with it and introduced it to others that were struggling as it really helped him turn a corner. This was some time ago and I am pleased to say that I put my son''s success in life, GCSEs in English and other subjects down to my simple action of using this book. A child that can''t read is incredibly disadvantaged and so this book was vital to resolving a major stumbling block in my son''s education.

I bought this as my daughter is dyslexic and is really not getting any help at school. She has a copy of this at school which is never used so I stumped up and bought one for home. The issue I have is that it''s a total chore, some of the parent instructions are not that clear and I find the writing quite small, so not great for visual impairments - which I have. I just don''t see any particular improvement, and we are doing it as instructed. We will keep going, as it''s expensive and I''m a complete scrooge but it''s not for kids who get bored or distracted easily - or parents with those same issues!
