Having already possessed a copy of Shania Twain''s USA version of "Up!" I thought it would be interesting to have the International Version (hence, the "Blue" disc). Most of the tracks are done to a decidedly Eastern beat using predominantly Eastern instruments and percussion.

While I have listened to it with an open mind - and there are some good tracks - there are some areas where it comes up short compared to the Pop ("Red") and Country ("Green") discs. Some of the songs (i.e. "Ces''t La Vie," "Juanita" and "Nah!") work well with the Eastern beat, but others, such as "Up!" and "When You Kiss Me" fall flat. It was a little disconcerting hearing a
(supposedly) slow ballad such as "When You Kiss Me" done to an Eastern beat, but what was even more disturbing was that the title track almost sounded like Shania was singing in a totally different key than the instruments!

As far as the songs in general are concerned, the highlights are"Juanita," "Forever And For Always," "Nah!" (both discs) and "When You Kiss Me" ("Red"). "Ces''t La Vie," although another one of my favorite tracks, is almost too reminiscent of ABBA''s "Dancing Queen." However, I felt "Ka-Ching!" and "Waiter! Bring Me Water!" were a bit lame.

That being said, if you''re a Shania Twain fan - and like all types of musical styles - then I would recommend this disc; otherwise, I would pass on it.

To start with, although I''m a Brit, I bought the Pop/Country pairing of the album (from Amazon.com, not Amazon.co.uk), so I have not heard the World Version.
Having read a number of the reviews of the album, there are some polarised views. I can understand why. Read on.....
If Country fans were waiting for a return to pure Country Shania, they are disappointed and have made their feelings felt. This is pure pop - even the Country album is not very Country!
Having said that, the album is chock-full of very good pop songs and out of 19, I think I like 17 of them very much and am content with the other two. The songs are full of clever lyrics (some might call them a little daft, off-beat, whackey - whatever). The music is played very well and the singing by ST and her band is good. My favourite tracks - "I''m Gonna Getcha Good", "Waiter! Bring Me Water", "Nah" and, in particular, "Forever And For Alwys* and "Ka-Ching!".
The whole point is that this is "Come On Over" volume two. ST will have a difficult choice to make NEXT time. This time, it''s been easy - continue a successful strategy. She must decide if it is to be COO volume 3, revert to Country (if necessary), to appease those Country fans (and I bet there are a lot of them) who want a pure Country album, or do something completely different. She has time to decide. Another album won''t come out for another 3 or 4 years.
As for me, I won''t pidgeon hole her and I would suggest others avoid doing it, too. Lots of folk artists cross-over into mainstream pop/rock.
This is a great album - the more I play it, the more I like it! So, carry on Shania. Perhaps, though, I should get the pre-COO albums.....
PS If the previous version of this review appears, my apologies for giving you two reviews!

I have to admit I''m not a longtime fan, didn''t come to this collection of songs with any idea of her background . I''d heard of her (her publicist does a good job of keeping her name out there) and I''d caught a few brief glimpses of her on tv, usually while flipping channels. Nothing really caught my interest. I had the impression she was a country singer who sometimes crossed into the pop market and, as such, was not of much interest.
But then I heard the song "Ka-Ching" and I wanted to hear more. It was catchy. It was addictive. It even had a unique message, a love song about loving something other than another person. So I bought this CD.
I was pleasantly surprised. As far as I know you can''t find Ka-Ching on any other CD than this one - other than as a single import. That song alone is worth the price of the entire CD, a song that packs a nice solid punch. That song alone could be the THEME song for the Suze Orman show or for her specials on The Young, Fabulous and Broke). It could be the theme song for any impulse spender, putting a powerful message behind a catchy tune.

But this compliation doesn''t rest solely on one song. There are others that are well worth hearing, sung in both country and pop versions (good concept, bonus points for a bit of creativity).

It doesn''t hurt that Twain''s voice is incredible, not the best out there but certainly up there in terms of being lyrical and graceful, with some very nice modulaton.

Shania Twain''s outfits are way hot. I love that sleazier-than-thou look. Combine that with a beautiful face, and a unique voice and you have...
What?
What exactly DO you have?
Well, you have someone who could sell a lot of posters and a lot of albums based on her looks alone, but when all is said and done her songs are nothing earthshaking.
Come on Over (the album prior to Up!) contained really catchy songs that actually sounded different from one another.
Up!, however, doesn''t feature anything even close in catchiness to "Man! I Feel Like a Woman" or "You''re Still the One" or "Don''t Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)" or even "Love Gets Me Everytime."
The closest to catchiness on Up! comes from the title track, which also happens to be the first track. From there, it''s pretty much downhill.
Not that Up! doesn''t feature nice vocals. It does. Shania has a great voice. I think.
Nothing on Up! pushes her, challenges her, gets her to rise above that sort of mid-range, oversexed, somewhat nasally tone she has.
And that''s probably my biggest complaint regarding Up! It doesn''t really go up at all. It goes sideways. It doesn''t improve on Come on Over. It doesn''t showcase anything new. In fact, it doesn''t even provide any outstanding musicianship. (Where are Dann Huff''s guitars when you need them?)
What Up! showcases more than anything is the Shania Marketing Machine -- her obviously sexy looks, and her husband Mutt Lange''s ability to package her accordingly. There are a million songs on Up!, not more than two of which I can recall off the top of my head. And there are TWO CDs in this package -- one pop oriented, one country oriented. It''s a ready-made marketing person''s dream come true.
Shania Twain is a bona fide phenomenon, no doubt about it. And she may even have a great voice. But she''s treading water on Up! I''d like to see her take risks, explore new styles, and, for heaven''s sake, get a decent lyricist. Some of her rhymes are ridiculous. ("I wanna grow a beard"? Come on, dude. That''s dumb.)
Up! is for Shania fans only. I don''t think it''ll win any new converts.

The first verse of the first song on this album presents a rather startling image - Shania Twain wearing a beard ("I wish that I could grow a beard/then I could cover up my spots/not play connect the dots..."). Shania singing about her "skin acting weird." And you know what? It works! That''s when I finally made peace with Shania. She''s a bubblegum pop singer! And a darn good one! She may well become the greatest bubblegum artist ever. I''ve never heard such mastery of mindless lyrics, technopop sounds and cheap, catchy melodies. Shania and producer/husband Mutt Lange know where their strengths and talents lie, and it would be a crime for them to attempt anything meaningful and deny the world their bubblegum wizardry. So "When everything is goin'' wrong/Don''t worry, it won''t last for long" - just pop in this CD and go "Up - up - up - Up" with Shania!

I think it is safe to assume that any one who has ever been in contact knows who Shania Twain is. The Country/Pop singer is known for some extremely well known hit singles. Her 1997 hit album Come On Over spawned the terrific pop song “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!” and “That Don’t Impress Me Much“. Played every day for years on the radio and television (when MTV played music), these two singles were in constant circulation for so long that any one who has one of those two devices has likely heard these songs at least once. So the follow up album Up!, picks up where Come On Over left off. Shedding more of the Country sound and focusing heavily on the Pop elements. This is not a bad thing at all as we all know by now, this lass can write a hell of a catchy song. Sitting at a whopping 73 minutes long and 19 tracks, it is easy to say that this album is a little over whelming. The album length would normally doom such an album into obscurity but the way this album was organised helps benefit from such a long length. Up! plays more like a large compilation rather than a standard album. Lots of different style from Pop, Country, Balladry and some Def Leppard(ish) Rock tunes. There are a lot of notable tracks and a few duds. But considering the quality of tracks such as, “Up!” “I’m Gonna Get You Good!” “Ka-Ching” and “What A Way To Wanna Be” you cannot argue against 3 bad songs. The album was produced by the legendary producer Mutt Lange. Well known for his work with AC/DC on their huge Back In Black album and making a critical chart success out of Sheffield’s own Def Leppard. His trademark sound really make their way into this album. The later half of the album fairly rocks up and has a lot of similarities with Hysteria era Def Leppard. Thunderous drums, guitar hooks and great catchy vocals are the name of the game here. The album was released with three different styles. There was Pop version (Red), a Country version (Green) and an International version (Blue). The two had subtle differences but not too much to make it a worthy purchase. The country edition simply adds a little extra twang to the songs. However, the International version completely reworks the music for 90% of the songs. The best way to describe this would be, a little bit more Indian in flavour. The album is bombarded with lots of foreign drum rhythms and other “Bollywood” sounds. Now that just sounds terrible, it really does. However I really enjoyed this version of the album for it’s complete contrast to the original. It’s upbeat, quite bouncy and really livens the mood. I would say it is definitely not for the narrow minded. Up! is a great Pop album. You certainly can’t complain when you consider there is barely a bad song through out the 19 tracks. A cheap buy these days and worth every penny. Published by Steven Lornie

This is my favourite Shania Twain album! I was very excited to find out it was pressed on vinyl. I got the Europe version, a double heavyweight 180 gram bright red coloured vinyl in gatefold packaging with lyrics in the gatefold. The paper sleeves have a protective lining inside to prevent scratches, which is pretty unusual to come as standard. Often found in premium collector releases. A reasonable price for a well pressed, polished release. Sound quality is superb and there is no surface noise. Would 100% recommend for any fan. Just have to stress one more time, this is a review for the Europe pressing NOT the US pressing. The US pressing is not even a heavyweight pressing and the sound quality is reportedly mediocre for a vinyl release. Steer clear. Look for the one ''Made in the EU''
